Exposure adjustments can brighten up shadows and reduce glare making your pictures easier to look at!

Exposure settings are one of the most important factors which produce quality photographs. Many factors influence these settings. Film sensitivity, f-stop, and lens speed are some of the camera settings. The type of available lighting such as incandescent, fluorescent, or sunlight, and dark or bright backgrounds, shadows and light reflections can all influence a snapshot. With this many factors involved it is not difficult to come out with a photograph which may need some exposure adjustments.

This was a night shot of the Alamo using 800 film. The brightly lit building was used for exposure settings on the camera but in doing so it created a dark background as well as shadows. There was also a considerable amount of noise in the dark areas of the photograph. The photo was first subjected to an overall exposure adjustment which brought out the shadows as well as the bright areas, a curves adjustment helped to even out the new exposure. A new sky was then added from another photograph. The  bright reflected areas on the Alamo were covered with a color mask and the tree on the right edge of the photo was added to for balance. You may note that the grass area in front of the Alamo was also edited in perspective and the distracting poles removed to provide a more centered view point and uncluttered viewing of the photograph. Finally a photo filter was placed over the foreground and the exposure on the background sky was dimmed to provide an overall appearance of sunset lighting.
The original photograph as taken. Dark shadows in the foreground and background plus the bright reflected area on the building distract from the picture. The lit sign in the background has got to go!
A slight exposure adjustment brought up the dark areas but did not help much with the distracting glare on the right side of the building. A lot of digital noise also became apparent in the darker portions of the photograph, a typical problem associated with digital camera shots in low light conditions. Cost includes element removal, enhancements, and exposure adjustments.

This original photograph was shot in bright sunlight with a reflective background creating some under exposure. The result was a high contrast picture with loss of color. The photograph was first subjected to a levels and curves adjustment, then the shadows and highlights were brought into balance. The color saturation was increased and a photo filter placed on top of the young lady to bring out the skin tone and the over all color even more. A few of the busy background elements were edited. The building and fence line were removed and shadows added for the trees. Finally the image was cropped and enlarged centering the subject lower and bringing her into the foreground. Downhill racer -  watch out camera guy! Nice shot, brightened, color enhanced, edited, cropped and enlarged. Cost includes element removal, slight colorization, enhancements, and exposure adjustments.
