Colorize black and white photographs!

Most requests to colorize black and white photographs involve a lot more than adding color to the picture elements. The photograph is usually a keepsake that may have been handed down from generations. So naturally it will support the same imperfections that all older photos have. A heavy loss of detail, fade, damage, and any photographic errors which may have occurred when the photo was taken (such as under or over exposure and camera shake). These are just a few of the problems that must be addressed before the colorization process can begin.

This submission presented a unique challenge because it was obviously a photo taken of another photo. The photograph was first enhanced with inspection and repair of individual pixels. A curves and levels adjustment followed. After close inspection, the photo was once again edited for speckling. The subject of the photograph needed to be centered so rather than cropping the right side of the picture and removing some of the photograph, the canvas area was increased to the left and photo elements were added which resulted in a much more even appearance and more importantly preserving the elements of the picture as originally submitted. Various color overlays were then placed over certain portions adding color to the photograph. The photo was then sharpened slightly, resized, cropped and bordered to a five by seven inch photograph.
This is the original photograph that was submitted. The date the picture was taken is unknown, estimated around the 1930's. The ball this lady is holding was difficult to look at, there was a lot of speckling, imperfections, and a general blurry appearance throughout the photograph.
The same photograph after enhancement and colorization. There has also been some element addition to the left of the picture to center the subject and provide a more even viewing. Rather than your eyes getting drawn to the left of the photograph, your eyes are drawn directly to the young lady.

In addition to the colorized photograph, a vignette was created and added to the order at no cost. Cost includes element addition, enhancements, and colorization.

This black and white photograph was estimated to be about 30 years old and is amazingly in good shape. The original size of the photo was 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches so the photo was scanned with an output size of 5 inches by 7 inches at 1200ppi. A few touch-ups were then needed to cover paper deterioration and smudges. Color overlays were added to the hair, face, ribbon, eyes, and mouth. A drop shadow was also placed behind the girl. You may notice that the background has been changed, when working with older photographs with a solid background it is usually easier to remove the background altogether rather than try to edit and repair it. Many types and colors of backgrounds can then be added. A blurred gradient was added to the first photograph. The second photograph background is a combination of a gradient and various filters plus a border addition.
Original black and white photograph. Remarkably this photo still has plenty of detail and does not need a lot of repair.
Slight repair and color overlays applied. A drop shadow was added to the subject and a blurred gradient substituted for the background.
